The Quaich Gets Around

Endless parties. Exotic drinks. Celebrity encounters. Family celebrations. Cross-country traveling. It's a given that the Quaich is having a better time than the rest of us right now.

As part of the rich tradition of the Quaich, the winning team is given an opportunity to showcase the venerable trophy for family, friends, and golf fans in a victory lap of sorts. Since beating Team Scotland in May by a score of 14 – 6, the members of Team USA have gladly shared the Quaich with the American people. The Quaich has been filled with crawfish at a Cajun festival in Louisiana, sunk to the bottom of the pool at Barrington Hills Country Club outside of Chicago, and been a lawn game target at a “Bro-lympics” competition in Virginia. As the most famous piece of hardware in sports, the Quaich is universally adored by all who are lucky enough to see and touch it in person.

The Quaich even made an appearance at Game 6 of the World Series in early November. As Houston Astros closing pitcher Ryan Pressly slammed the door on the Philadelphia Phillies in the 9th inning, the Quaich was seen being filled with Hopadillo IPA and passed around by the jubilant, well-heeled fans in the premium seats behind home plate.

Future stops for the Quaich include Super Bowl LVII in Phoenix, a Taylor Swift concert in Tampa, and WrestleMania 39 in Los Angeles.

New Rival Tour Looking To Poach Quaich Players

Controversy has once again engulfed the Quaich as the upstart “Tartan Tour” has been holding multiple clandestine meetings with Quaich superstars. The Tartan Tour, which is backed by the secretive Haggis Investment Fund, is rumored to be offering lucrative incentives to players who chose to defect from the Quaich.

An inside source revealed that the Tartan Tour has lined up Team Scotland players Ian “Big Man” MacCallum, Ross “Rosco” MacCallum and Allen “Orr Wullie” Wilson to be co-commissioners. The Scottish trio, who have a long history of aggressively taking on the establishment, wasted no time recruiting other players to the break-away league. Undercover reporting revealed that several popular current Team USA members have been lavishly entertained in Scotland over the summer.

Swayze & son with MacCallums at Elie
Team USA icon Eric “Swayze” Silagy, who is still sour at not being part of the original Quaich events in 2004 and 2006, is reportedly tempted by the idea of being a Tartan Tour founder. He even brought his 20-year-old son Maks to St. Andrews to help him decide whether to make the switch.

As Swayze departed Scotland, he shouted at the MacCallum brothers from the steps of his private jet, “I’ll get my people to talk to your people and we’ll get something over the line.” If Swayze bolts for the Tartan Tour, it is expected that the other players in his "tree" such as Ray "Mundo" Bonilla, Sam "Scottish Sam" Forrest, and Chris "Guv'na" Hughes, will follow.

All smiles at Tartan Tour planning session

“We believe we can co-exist with the Quaich,” said Rosco, pledging to have Tartan Tour events only in the Quaich off-years. Quaich officials were succinct in their response. “Any player who plays in a Tartan Tour event will be permanently barred from participation in the Quaich.”

Chris “Guvna” Hughes jetted into Scotland to weigh up his options as well. Guvna was joined by a mysterious American player, rumored to be one-time Quaich fan favorite John “Gumby” Reardon. Gumby, of course, has been desperate to rejoin Team USA and would jump at an opportunity to be part of the new tour. As for Guvna, it is well-known that he was

Mystery American being courted by MacCallums
unhappy with his shared bunkroom accommodation at the last Quaich in Rosemary Beach, but he is likely only leveraging his Tartan Tour flirtation for a single room during Quaich 2024. Also, given the gun laws in Scotland, it seems unlikely that he would jump ship. In Scotland, Guvna was heard muttering, “If I cain’t bring ma guns, I ain’t goin’ “.

Mundo may not "measure up" to Tartan Tour height requirements
The trickle turned into a flood as even Quaich stalwart Ray “Mundo” Bonilla considered making the move. Sources reveal that Mundo met with the MacCallum brothers in St. Andrews to discuss financial incentives. He was purportedly unimpressed by the MacCallum brothers’ initial offer of two pints of Bellhaven Best and a steak pie with brown sauce. Although Rosco did also offer to include a sticky toffee pudding as a sweetener.

Finally for the Quaich aficionados wondering about who could be next to consider the renegade tour, we can confirm it will not be Chris “Cudman” Van Horne. After an exhaustive complaint procedure, it was established that the “Sine Die” ban on Cudman for his infamous expletive-filled rant in the dining room of the Fairmont St Andrews still stands and he will not be offered a place on the Tartan Tour. When asked for comment, Cudman said, “They can go f*** themselves.”

We hope to provide further updates shortly.

Captain Hef Names Scotland Vice Captains

Tony “Hef” Denson, the newly appointed captain of Team Scotland, wasted no time in assembling his leadership team in advance of Quaich 2024. Wearing only a scarlet kimono-style silk bathrobe during a live-streamed press conference from his bedroom in Bonita Springs, Florida, Hef announced that his Vice Captains in 2024 will be Natasha Novoselova and Paloma Sunil. The stunning beauties, who appeared alongside Hef, have little golf experience. Novoselova, an aspiring model and club hostess, is best known as a one-time back-up singer for the underground Russian band Søika. And Sunil’s resume features a secondary role in the Bollywood film “Jism 3”.

Hef and Vice Captains

When asked for his perspective on his predecessor’s term as captain, Hef, who is the first non-Scot to lead Team Scotland, was characteristically blunt.  “Dear Ronnie’s efforts at Rosemary Beach were really quite flaccid,” said Hef. “I plan a reliable, enduring, rigorous captaincy. And we will see a quality response from the guys … again and again.”

When asked about their lack of golf experience, the new Vice Captains delighted the assembled media with sexual double entendres about getting it in the hole, stiff shafts, foursomes, playing the backside and mowed fringe.  “Our golf knowledge is secondary,” said Novoselova. “What is most important is that we understand what motivates and inspires men to perform.”

The 11th meeting of the teams from the USA and Scotland is planned for the northwest of England in 2024. Further details will be announced at a later time.

Career Statistics

There was some movement in the career individual statistics as a result of the 2022 Quaich matches in Rosemary Beach, FL. While the top four remained unchanged, Chris "Cudman" Van Horne leap-frogged the brothers MacCallum into a tie for 5th on the all-time leaderboard. Chris "Guvna" Hughes also jumped a couple of spots in the ranking on the virtue of his 4-0 record in Rosemary Beach. Scottish Sam trails only Fabric as the leader in percentage of wins. Medium Mike remains last on the list in all categories.

USA Runs Away With Win In 20th Anniversary of Quaich Matches

A renascent Team USA won all four match sessions in Rosemary Beach to hand Scotland its biggest loss since 2008, taking the Quaich with a final score of 14 - 6. The U.S. squad clearly had something to prove and waited 4 long years to show the world it is a changed team from the one that lost the previous two events.

"I am so proud of my team," said first-time Captain Brian "Goombay" Farley. "I just hope everyone had fun."

Goombay was masterful in guiding his team with his light touch and "fun first" mentality. Defying convention and ignoring statistical analysis, Goombay sent out pairs that had little history with each other.

"I thought the unusual parings were a f***ing mistake and told him so," said Chris "Cudman" Van Horne. "But I am glad it worked out for me." Cudman led the US squad with 4 points along with Chris "Guvna" Hughes.

The Scottish team seemed out of sorts from the outset. The beautiful Florida weather and availability of on-course beverages may have been the cause. Trailing 6.5 to 1.5 after day one, Scottish Captain Ronald "NSW Ronnie" Denholm called an emergency team meeting later that night. Despite it being a closed door session, NSW's shouts from the team room could be heard in throughout the plantation style house on Round Road in Rosemary Beach. "Ah cannae even lewk at yew! Yew are nae the descendants o' William Wallace! Ima nae cactus expert, but I know a bunch of pricks when I see them! The only one scoring points here is our f***ing American!"

The Scottish points leader in 2022 was Sam "Scottish Sam" Forrest, a Texan now living in Jupiter, Florida. Scottish Sam, who finished with 3 points, filled in for the ailing Douglas "Slicer" Brown, who was unable to make the trip across the Atlantic due to a "dodgy ticker".

NSW's attempts to rally his team fell short. Team USA never let up on the accelerator and cruised to a comfortable victory. With his shoulders wrapped in the Stars and Stripes on the 18th green at Windswept Golf Club, Goombay had a satisfied smile on his face as he watched his team celebrate a well-deserved victory.

Asked to sum up the what the team victory meant to him, Cudman took a healthy swig of High Noon Lime and said, "No Cudman, no Quaich."

Innocence Lost

Tony "Hef" Denson took Stephen "Web" Webster on a tour of the photo gallery on his mobile phone during the bus ride from Rosemary Beach to the site of Friday's singles competition. "I like to think of myself as open-minded" said a dazed Web. "But I honestly had no idea. My eyes have been opened."

"It's no big deal, really," said Hef. "I only shared the hits with him."
